That no matter how hard they tried to get the uniform right, it was unappreciated

Those students didn't make it through training

Those students didn't understand the purpose of the drill

You were never going to succeed

You were never going to have a perfect uniform

The instructors weren't going to allow it

Sometimes no matter how well you prepare

or how well you perform you still end up as a sugar cookie

It's just the way life is sometimes

If you want to change the world

get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward

Every day during training you were challenged with multiple physical events
每天的训练都包括多重身体挑战
long runs, long swims, obstacle courses, hours of calisthenics
长跑 长距离游泳 障碍跨越 数小时的健身操
something designed to test your mettle
这些都是为了测试你的耐力
Every event had standards times you had to meet
每种挑战都有标准 包括时间标准
If you failed to meet those standards your name was posted on a list
如果不能达标 你的名字就会被记下来
and at the end of the day those on the list were invited to a "circus."
一天结束之后 被记下来的人会被请入"马戏表演"
A circus was two hours of additional calisthenics
"马戏"是额外两小时的健身操
designed to wear you down, to break your spirit, to force you to quit
这是为了让你累趴下 让你精神崩溃 逼你退出
No one wanted a circus
没人想"表演马戏"
A circus meant that for that day you didn't measure up
"马戏"表示那一天 你没有达标
A circus meant more fatigue
"马戏"意味着你会更累
and more fatigue meant that the following day would be more difficult
更累意味着下一天你会更困难
and more circuses were likely
这又更可能导致"马戏"
But at some time during SEAL training
有时 在海豹训练中
everyone made the circus list
每个人都被记了名字
But an interesting thing happened to those who were constantly on the list
有趣的是 经常被记名字的人
Overtime those students
随着时间的推移
who did 2 hours of extra calisthenics, got stronger and stronger

人物简介
威廉·麦克雷文，1977年加入海豹突击队，四星级上将，曾指挥猎杀伊拉克高级将领和击毙本拉登行动，2011年8月，就任美国特种作战司令部总司令。麦克雷文是德克萨斯大学的校友，此番重回校园发表毕业典礼演讲，他将自己最初在海豹突击队训练时的经历分享给毕业生，并从中抽出哲理，作为对毕业生的建议。
