On may 15th, I attended the Seattle debate tournament. This was my first time to compete in an international tournament, prepare for the competition in such a short period of time, stay up the whole night, and debate with students from all around the world.

I learned a lot during this process, including to fully involve the reading materials and evidence into the cases, to answer the opponent’s questions directly, and to improve time management.

My partner and I put a lot of efforts into the preparation, and the results were pretty satisfying for us. I also had an extremely unique experience throughout the night in which we were debating, and I even saw the sunrise.

In a nutshell, even though the process of preparing for this debate tournament was hard, but the results, the experience and the things we learned were totally worth it. Thanks to my teacher, my judges, my partner, and my opponents.

What I am feeling after the debate:

After the debate, I felt really nervous because I was worried if I got a good grade because I didn’t want it to be me to be the reason that we didn’t go into the finals.

Also, I felt really relieved because all of the pressure that I was on me was gone. Since I couldn’t do anything to change the result of the debate, all I needed to do was just wait for the judges to give out the teams that got into the finals.

Thirdly, I felt a bit guilty. This is because in the last round, I did a good final focus, but it needed something. I said how have standardized tests doesn’t give kids creativity, but the. u didn’t say how creativity is important, so the judge gave the point to the other team. The judge told our team if I said why creativity is important, then he might have considered to give our side the point.

Lastly, I actually feel a tiny bit proud. This is because this time is one of my first formal public forum debate and the SD小助手 told us that it was a debate for 5 to 6 grade. Me and my teammate were 4th graders, so he told us that he thought we weren’t going to win any rounds, but we won one round. Which is making me very proud.

So this is what I am feeling after the debate.

Hello everyone, I’m Hao Zimo.

First of all, I am very honoured to participate in this debate competition and won third place in The Best Speaker. Secondly, I want to express my gratitude to all the people who have helped me. Thank you very much to my coach for coaching us carefully. Thanks to my partner for our tacit cooperation. I would also like to thank all the judges for giving valuable comments to us and making us aware of our strengths and weaknesses. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for their encouragement and accompanying me during the competition.

I hope everyone can continue to work hard, stick to debate, pursue our dreams, and become better !

There were only 4 days left when I got to know Seattle debate tournament and made a decision to take part in it with my partner. That meant we need to read the materials and write the manuscripts in just 4 days and what was more challenging, this was my first time to participate in Public forum debate.

I spent all day long on reading materials and setting up meetings with my partner to discuss the arguments and supporting data. Although it was tiring, we learnt a lot from the competition which is worth our efforts. For example, I learnt to be more patient with my opponents, I learnt to only summarize the main strong arguments in the second speech and so on.

By the way, it’s the first time I stay up all night due to time zone differences. I saw the sunrise from my balcony during the competition, which was a magnificent sight.

This debate competition means a lot to me and a lot of thanks to my teachers and judges and of course also to my partner.
