Men and women of the world move toward free markets through the door to prosperity.
全世界的男男女女则经过通向繁荣的大门进入市场。
The people of the world agitate for free expression and free thought through the door to the moral and intellectual satisfactions that only liberty allows.
全世界人民正在经过通向只有自由才能赋予的道德与智性满足的大门，奋力争取言论自由和思想自由。
We know what works: Freedom works. We know what's right: Freedom is right.
我们懂得发挥作用的东西是什么，那是自由；我知道正确的东西是什么，那也是自由。
We know how to secure a more just and prosperous life for man on Earth: through free markets, free speech, free elections, and the exercise of free will unhampered by the state.
我们知道怎样为地球上的人类争取更为公正和繁荣的生活，那就是借助自由市场、自由言论、自由选举以及不受国家干涉地行使自由意志。
For the first time in this century, for the first time in perhaps all history, man does not have to invent a system by which to live.
人类再也毋须发明一套赖以生存的体制，这在本世纪乃是首次，在整个历史上或许也是破天荒的第一回。
We don't have to talk late into the night about which form of government is better.
我们现在用不着就何种政府形式更好这一问题进行喋喋不休的讨论。
We don't have to wrest justice from the kings.
我们也用不着从什么君王那里争取正义.
We only have to summon it from within ourselves.
而只须从我们自己内部把正义召唤出来即可。
We must act on what we know.
我们必须根据我们所知的事物进行活动。
I take as my guide the hope of a saint: In crucial things, unity; in important things, diversity; in all things, generosity.
我把这种圣徒式的希望作为自己的行动指南——在关键的问题上，做到团结一致；在重大的问题上，允许多样性；在所有问题上，则须宽宏大量。
America today is a proud, free nation, decent and civil, a place we cannot help but love.
今天的美国乃是一个骄傲和自由的国家，庄严正派，谦和有礼，对于这样一个国度，我们怎能不十分热爱呢！
We know in our hearts, not loudly and proudly,but as a simple fact,
我们固然不必大声张扬和自负自傲，但我们却从内心懂得一个简单的事实，
that this country has meaning beyond what we see, and that our strength is a force for good.
即这个国家的意义决不仅限于我们所看到的一切，我们拥有的实力乃是一种向善的力量。
But have we changed as a nation even in our time?
即便在我们这个时代，我们作为一个国家是否也发生了变化呢？
Are we enthralled with material things, less appreciative of the nobility of work and sacrifice?
我们是否已被物质层面的事物所迷惑，而不再像过去那样欣赏工作和牺牲的崇高伟大了呢？
My friends, we are not the sum of our possessions.
我的朋友们，我们并不等于我们所拥有财产的总和，
They are not the measure of our lives.
那些东西也不能成为评价我们生活的尺度。
In our hearts we know what matters.
我们在内心懂得什么是至关重要的。
We cannot hope only to leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account.
我们不能只希望仅仅留给自己的后代一辆更大的汽车或一笔更多的银行存款。
We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent, a citizen who leaves his home, his neighborhood and town better than he found it.
我们应当寄希望于让他们懂得，做一个忠实的朋友意味着什么，做一个慈爱的家长意味着什么，以及做一个离别家人、邻里和家乡后仍能留下更好名声的公民意味着什么。
What do we want the men and women who work with us to say when we are no longer there?
当我们不在某一个地方时，我们会希望那些与我们共过事的男男女女说些什么呢？
That we were more driven to succeed than anyone around us?
是说我们比任何人都更没命地追求成功吗？
乔治·赫伯特·沃克·布什，美国第51届41任总统。由于美国历史上存在过两位布什总统，因此又常被称为老布什，以便与其同样担任过美国总统的长子乔治·沃克·布什作区别。老布什最为人知的政绩是1991年海湾战争。他在任内成功打败伊拉克，并对其实施经济制裁。
