Guiding Questions
2025 : Reigniting the Future

Long before Elon Musk’s Tesla, electric cars were already popular for their convenience, quietness, and lack of horse manure aroma. Electric cars were poised to dominate the twentieth century—and then they disappeared for a hundred years. With your teammates, explore the invention and spread of early automobiles. What happened to electric cars and what led to their return? What were some of the key innovations in automobiles? Have you ever gotten stuck inside a self-driving taxi? And, most impokantly, where are our flying cars?
Topic 1: invention and spread of early automobiles
Automobile History

The automobile was rst invented and perfected in Germany and France in the late 1800s, though Americans quickly came to dominate the automotive industry in the rst half of the twentieth century. Henry Ford innovated mass-production techniques that became standard, and Ford, General Motors and Chrysler emerged as the “Big Three” auto companies by the 1920s. Manufacturers funneled their resources to the military during World War II, and afterward automobile production in Europe and Japan soared to meet growing demand. Once vital to the expansion of American urban centers, the industry had become a shared global enterprise with the rise of Japan as the leading automaker by 1980.
When Were Cars Invented?
The 1901 Mercedes, designed by Wilhelm Maybach for Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, deserves credit for being the rst modern motorcar in all essentials.
Its thirty-ve-horsepower engine weighed only fourteen pounds per horsepower, and it achieved a top speed of fty-three miles per hour. By 1909, with the most integrated automobile factory in Europe, Daimler employed some seventeen hundred workers to produce fewer than a thousand cars per year.
Topic 2: key innovations
The top technological advancements that changed automobiles forever.

By most objective measures, today is the automobile’s golden age. Cars are more powerful, more efficient, and more capable than ever. The editors of the first issue of Motortrend would certainly marvel at our world of 800-horsepowerperformance cars, 30-miles-per-gallon SUVs, and vehicles that all but drive themselves on the open highway, let alone the latest electric cars, trucks, andcrossovers. Most important, vehicles today are the safest in history, with traffic deaths hovering around 1.35 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
Topic 3: self-driving taxi
LA man nearly misses flight as self-driving Waymo taxi drives around parking lot in circles

A Los Angeles man nearly missed his flight back home last week, all because he says the self-driving Waymo taxi he was using to get to the airport wouldn't stop driving around a parking lot in circles.
Topic 4: flying cars

The year is 2015. “Madscientist” Doc Brown has just brought wide-eyed teenager Marty McFly to the future in style: aboard a flying DeLorean. Although the time travelers are out of place, their mode of transportation is not Cars zip by in the sky. U TECH Flying cars could soon become a reality The technology to make these vehicles already exists We’re now 10 years past the future envisioned in Back to the Future Part II, and still no flying cars. But aerial automobiles, a mainstay of sci-fi and fantasy stories since the early 1900s, may soon be reality. The technology to make flying cars already exists, says Xiao song Du, an aerospace engineer at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla .
